Captain Spinler was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron at Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam. On June 21, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a mission over the Plain of Jars, Laos. After dropping napalm his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered in 2010 and identified on January 5, 2011. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
