Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class Stewart was a crew member of a PB4Y-5A Privateer patrol bomber with Patrol Bomber Squadron 48, based at Naval Air Station Sangley Point, Philippines. On July 30, 1953, while on patrol, the port engine caught fire and the plane crashed at sea, killing ten crewmen. Five crewmen were rescued by a Coast Guard aircraft.
