Major Stewart was a member of Detachment A-302, Company A, 5th Special Forces Group. On March 24, 1967, he was advising a mobile strike force 7 Miles East of Bu Dop, Phuoc Long Province, South Vietnam. When attacked by a superior force, he provided cover so his unit could be safely withdraw. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
