Master Sergeant Stokes was a member of the 3rd Squad, 3rd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On August 11, 1950, while fighting the enemy as a member of "Task Force Smith" at the Naktong Bulge in South Korea, he was hit with a bullet in the stomach and died before he could be taken to the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.
