First Lieutenant Stone was the company commander of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On January 7, 1968, he was on a combat operation near the border of Quang Nam and Quang Tin Provinces in South Vietnam. He was last seen advancing with the armored personnel carriers attached to his unit when he was killed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
