Staff Sergeant Stride was a member of Command and Control North, 5th Special Forces Group. On October 5, 1968, he was leading a reconnaissance patrol in Laos near the South Vietnam border, 10 miles south of the A Shau Valley. The patrol was ambushed and Staff Sergeant Stride was mortally wounded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
