Warrant Officer, First Class Sulander was a member of 281st Aviation Company, 10th Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group. On December 2, 1966, he was flying in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1D) trying to rescue a long range reconnaissance patrol in Laos, when it was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
