Colonel Sullivan was a member of the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron at Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On June 27, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on a mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on June 3, 1983 and identified on June 27, 1983. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
