Major Sullivan was a member of the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On June 21, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission about 5 miles southwest of Kep, Ha Bac Province, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on January 11, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
