Captain Sutter was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On December 31, 1971, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) near Na Phao, Khammouane Province, Laos, where his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
