Commander Thomas was the commanding officer of Attack Squadron 153, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On August 13, 1965, he was flying in a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on an assault of surface to air missile when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire. His remains were recovered on March 5, 1996 and identified on October 11, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
