Staff Sergeant Thomas was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On April 3, 1968, he was declared missing while on patrol near An Hoa in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
