Major Thomas was a member of the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Air Base, Thailand. On May 5, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission over Ha Bac 10 miles east of Kep Ha, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and caught fire. He ejected and parachuted to the ground, but contact with him was lost. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 7, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
