Ensign Thompson was a crew member of a P2V-5 Neptune patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 49, based at Naval Air Station Bermuda. On October 19, 1953 the aircraft was waved off a landing in St. Georges Harbor, stalled and crashed killing 4 Crewmen.
