For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Toomey was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

USMA Class of 1949, First Lieutenant Toomey was a member of the I & R Platoon, Headquarters Company, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on October 5, 1950 and returned to duty on October 10, 1950. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in Korea on November 28, 1950 and died while a prisoner on February 28, 1951. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
