Major Vaden was a member of the 1131st Special Activities Squadron. On December 10, 1964, he was a member of a Vietnamese crew on board a Provider Cargo Aircraft (C-123) on an administrative mission, when the aircraft was shot down just east of Da Nang, South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on July 18, 1984 and identified on August 11, 2010. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
