Specialist, Fourth Class Van Artsdalen was a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 23rd Infantry Division. On May 9, 1968, he was fighting the enemy about 20 miles west of Tam Ky, Quang tin Province, South Vietnam when he was killed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
