Captain Van Fleet was awarded the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Iran OC with Five Clasps, Republic of Korea Meritorious Service Medal with Nine Clasps and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
USMA Class of 1948, Captain Van Fleet was the pilot of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 13th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. On April 4, 1952, while on a night intruder mission, his aircraft crashed near Haeju, North Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on March 31, 1954. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
