Captain Voelm was the pilot of a F-84G Thunderjet fighter with the 429th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 474th Fighter-Bomber Group. On July 19, 1953, while on a combat mission, his aircraft was last seen leaving the target area. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on July 20, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
