First Lieutenant Ward was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 212, Marine Air Group 12 aboard the USS BATAAN (CVL-29). On January 19, 1951, while strafing enemy positions four miles south of Kumchon, North Korea, his aircraft was struck by small arms fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
