Lieutenant Ward was a crew member of a PB4Y-2S Privateer patrol bomber with Patrol Bomber Squadron 871. On August 6, 1951, the aircraft was flying near Smith Island, Washington and experienced a hard water impact a half mile off shore. Nine crewmen were killed.
