First Lieutenant Waterman was a pilot serving with a Fighter-Interceptor unit at Johnson Air Force Base, Japan, with the responsibility of escorting bombers over Korea. He was transferred from Japan to Hamilton Air Force Base, California on February 4, 1953. His aircraft crashed in San Pablo Bay, California on April 9, 1953.
