For his leadership and great valor, Master Sergeant Watkins was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Master Sergeant Watkins was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Company H, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On September 3, 1950 near Yongsan, South Korea, when his unit was surrounded by the enemy, he organized a defensive perimeter. Later, he left the perimeter, killing the enemy and recovering their weapons and ammunition. Then he assaulted an enemy position, killing six enemy soldiers. Although mortally wounded, he directed his units withdrawal, refusing aid.
