Private First Class West was a member of Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on December 10, 1950. His remains were recovered on September 2, 1954 and was identified on May 4, 2007. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
