For his leadership and valor, Major Whaley was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the American Theater of Operations Medal, the Pacific Theater of Operations Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Major Whaley was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 8202nd Army Unit, Korean Military Assistance Group (KMAG). He was seriously wounded by the enemy in North Korea on October 26, 1950 and returned to duty on February 13, 1951. He was taken Prisoner of War while advising the South Koreans in South Korea later that day and died while a prisoner on May 7, 1951. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
