Corporal Whiting was a member Company E, 2nd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On December 19, 1952, he was burned to death when an unknown attacked the 2nd Division Non-commissioned Officers' Academy with a flame thrower.
