Notes
Chief Engineman Whittemore was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Moorings at New London, Connecticut. On the evening of February 15, 1953, he and two other Coast Guardsmen had repaired a disabled launch, beached at Cornfield Point off Saybrook, Connecticut. As they were trying to bring the launch into Saybrook Harbor, it became disabled and beached on the breakwater rocks. The men were exposed to the rough sea, high winds and below-freezing temperatures for an extended period. He and another Coast Guardsman died from exposure.
