Captain Wilkinson was a member of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 10, 1972, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on a mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam. His aircraft was hit, exploded and crashed. His remains were recovered on August 27, 1978 and identified on September 11, 1978. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
