For his leadership and great valor, Private First Class Wilson was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Private First Class Wilson was a medic with the Medical Company, 187th Airborne Infantry Regimental Combat Team. On October 21, 1950, he accompanied Company I on a reconnaissance near Opari, North Korea. When his unit came under intense enemy fire, he exposed himself in order to treat the wounded. After his unit was ordered to withdraw, he discovered a comrade was still in the battle area and returned unarmed to rescue the man. He was Killed in Action during this attempted rescue.
