Lieutenant Colonel Winstead was a decorated veteran of World War II. In Korea, he commanded the 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On July 15, 1950 near Taepyoung, South Korea, when his command post came under attack, he personally organized a counter attack. He was Killed in Action the day following.
