Colonel Wistrand was a member of the 563rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 9, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission over Mu Gia Pass, Laos, where his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
