Lieutenant Commander Wood was a member of Attack Squadron 55, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS RANGER (CVA-61). On May 2, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) flying over the South China Sea near North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
