Captain Yonan was a member of Advisory Team 22, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On April 24, 1972, he was at Tanh Canh Base Camp near Dak To, Kontum Province when the camp was overrun by the Viet Cong.

His remains were recovered on April 6, 1988 and identified on October 14, 1988, he is buried at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
