Captain Zimmer was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 542, Marine Attack Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On August 29, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) flying over Quang Nam Province South Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
