Major Zook was a member of 61st Troop Carrier Squadron, Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam. On May 31, 1966, he was the co-pilot of a Lockheed Hercules Transport (C-130E) with a mission of placing a floating bomb on the Song Ma River that would detonate as it passed under the Ham Ron Bridge in North Vietnam. As the bombing run was being made, the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on April 10, 1986 and identified on October 22, 1986. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
