For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Bancroft was awarded the Navy Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
First Lieutenant Bancroft was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a HO3S-1 Sikorsky helicopter with Marine Observation Squadron 6, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 29, 1950, while searching for a downed friendly aircraft near Uijongbu, Korea, his helicopter was hit by enemy fire and crashed ten miles northeast of Seoul. He was rescued but died shortly thereafter.
