For his leadership and valor, Sergeant First Class Blain was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Sergeant First Class Blain was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. After delivering supplies to the front line on October 14, 1950, his convoy was ambushed and he was wounded. All thirteen men in his convoy were taken prisoners. That evening they were executed near Kaesong, North Korea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
