For his leadership and valor, Captain Dodson was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 4 Gold Stars, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Dodson was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 312, Marine Air Group 12 aboard the aircraft carrier USS BAIROKO (CVE-115). On March 5, 1952, while on a combat mission near Taetan, North Korea, his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire, lost its port wing and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
