For his leadership and valor, Major Greene was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

USMA Class of June 1943, Major Greene was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomber Wing. On August 14, 1951, while on a combat mission, he was last seen making a run on a target. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
