For his leadership and valor, Captain Laney was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
Captain Laney was a decorated veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a pilot of a B-26C Invader bomber with the 8th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. On May 14, 1951, during his 38th mission, he risked his life to successfully attack an enemy convoy at low altitude near Pyongyang, North Korea. On June 29, 1951, contact with his aircraft was lost, he was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
