For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Lee was awarded the Navy Commendation Ribbon, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Private First Class Lee was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while on a rescue mission of fellow marines, trapped by the enemy at Outpost Irene near Panmunjon, Korea on August 17, 1952. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
