For his leadership and heroism, Lieutenant Lilly was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

USMA Class of 1950, Lieutenant Lilly was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on September 3, 1950. His remains were recovered on May 5, 2003 and identified on July 22, 2003. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
