For his leadership and valor, Sergeant Staats was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Sergeant Staats was a medic with the Medical Company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy while tending his wounded comrades in North Korea on November 4, 1950 and died of those wounds on December 31, 1950. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
