For his leadership and valor, Captain Walz was awarded the Navy Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
Captain Walz was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the commanding officer of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On March 29, 1953, he led his company to successfully retake "Outpost Vegas" and was killed by enemy 120 MM mortar fire.
