For his leadership and great valor, Staff Sergeant Windrich was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart with Gold Star, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Staff Sergeant Windrich was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a platoon sergeant from Company I, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On December 2, 1950, he organized his platoon to hold off vicious counterattacks by Chinese forces near Yudam-ni, North Korea. Although seriously wounded, he rescued seven wounded comrades. He continued to defend his position until he died from loss of blood.
